Locals In Sierra Leone Are ‘Starving’ Due To Illegal Trawling By Chinese Trawlers

Fisheries employ 500,000 people in the west African nation’s approximately 8 million population, account for 12% of the GDP, and provide 80 percent of the population’s protein.
That their catch is fast diminishing places they blame completely on foreign fleets. Chinese vessels control over 40% of industrial licenses; despite being legal, locals claim they under-declare their catch, and contribute little to the local economy.
